To be “green” or not to be?
Apr 22
Everybody knows that today April 22th is Earth Day. You didn’t? Let me refresh your memory.
Since September 1969 US senator Gaylord Nelson announced the idea to celebrate an International Earth Day. At this time, environmental concerns weren’t the major preoccupation, as it was then that the United States was involved in Vietnam War. Although there was no chance to cover students disappointment over the war, Nelson kept on talking about his big event, recruiting important activists throughout the country and planning to finally celebrate the very first Earth Day on April 22th 1970.
Earth Day 1970 was an unexpected success and marked the beginning of the environmental movement we know.
Do you feel better know? Great! Let me start again:
Everybody knows NOW that today April 22th is Earth Day, so here is my question: what do YOU do to participate to this worldwide event?
At Virtually Canadian, we didn’t wait April 22th to make an effort for Earth’s sake.
- YES we are recycling paper at the office and reuse scrap paper.
- YES we reduce document margin and use EcofontĀ® if we have to print a document.
- And YES we manage office machine energy use and drink Fair Trade Coffee to stay awake.
Even if you just use your bike or take the bus to go to work, it would be a good start (at Virtually Canadian, out of 12 employees, only 2 use their car every day).
So what do you think? To be green or not to be green?
Google April Fool Jokes
Mar 31
Every Year, Google entertains us (well, me at least) with some April Fool jokes, gadgets, announcements etc…They have been putting a show every year, starting in 2000 and coming up with creative ideas. They actually put quite a bit of work, creating pages, animations and quite a bit of custom coding in some cases.
Here is a list of all the pranks they played on us :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google%27s_hoaxes
Here is the first one:
2000 - Mental Plex
Google announced a new “MentalPlex” search technology that supposedly read the user’s mind to determine what the user wanted to search for, thus eliminating the step of actually typing in the search query. This always led to a page full of April Fool’s results.
Here is one of the latest prankĀ from last year:
2009 – YouTube
On April 1, 2009, Youtube gave some users a look at a new “viewing experience” when they selected a video within certain areas such as the “recommended for you” section. This new interface caused the whole layout including the video you were watching to flip upside down. Although the option was not visible for some, it could be viewed by adding &flip=1 to the end of a video URL. Adding &flip=1 to the end of a video URL no longer causes this effect, and the video loads normally. A page on “tips for viewing the new layout” suggested users hang their monitors upside down from the ceiling, although the layout did not reverse mouse-control.
You can also “try” to do a search on the April Fool Google site: http://www.googleaprilfools.com/
So the big question is: What is it going to be this year? Any guesses?
PACIFIC COFFEE ROASTERS
Coffee roasters in Vancouver – BC
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As Search Engine Optimization specialists, we take care of a lot of different websites here at Virtually Canadian. From an hotel in Hawaii to a sofa bed producer, we also have the chance to have Pacific Coffee Roasters as one of our clients.
Because we need to be awake to provide them the greatest job possible, we need a great coffee. Indeed, instead of going to Starbucks, we now have our own French Press Coffee Maker (Go France Go!) and we buy our organic fair trade coffee at Pacific Coffee Roasters. Because we want to help every local business, we will preferably buy from local companies in the Vancouver area, and for sure in British Colombia in general, and also because it’s healthy and good for the environment.
But why is these coffee roasters in Vancouver so different?
Pacific Coffee Roasters are experts in buying and blending coffee beans from all over the world in order to create special batches of coffee with the best selection of coffee beans. As you can see on the pictures below, all the process in made on site, in Chilliwack, BC.
They are smelling, tasting and judging the quality of the beans that we buy from around the world. They are able to select the best beans for their customers after this process is completed.
So, you can actually choose between 14 different types of coffee. But where can you find Pacific Coffee Roasters products?
You could buy some directly Online – Fair Trade Coffee Shopping – or come at their Fair Trade coffee stores in Vancouver, Chilliwack or Abbotsford.
Not convinced yet? Feel free to leave comments and ask questions on our blog. Cheers!
